The Expulsion from Paradise (Durer) shirt
Artist: Albrecht Durer

Instilled with a sense of action and urgency, this dramatic piece captures the moment in which Adam and Eve are forced to leave the Garden of Eden. According to W. Strauss (1980), "As it appears, Eve, carrying a branch to cover her nudity in her left hand, is leaving the Garden of Eden hurriedly, even stepping on Adam's foot, whereas the angel is giving the latter a gentle push, as he takes a last glance backward at Paradise Lost. The serpent and the symbolic animals have disappeared, but more fruit is left on the tree" ( Strauss 406).

Created in 1612, this original woodcut is monogrammed and dated with Albrecht Dürer's signature initials in the woodblock 'AD' on a slate in the upper right (hanging from the branch). This work is from the Italian edition of 1612 with Italian text on verso.
