Artist: Dalziel's Bible Gallery
This scene from the Old Testament (Genesis, 46, 2) illustrates the moment when Jacob first hears the voice of th Lord. Sandys symbolises the power of God's voice by depicting it as a thunderbolt and a cloud emanating a blindingly strong light.
This wood engraving may have been a design orginally intended for the life of Joseph (Betty Elzea, 'Frederick Sandys 1828-1904: a Catalogue Raisonné, pp. 224-5). Ultimately, it was engraved by the Dalziels and published in their Bible Gallery in 1881.
