Artist: Hans Burgkmair the Elder
According to the legend, Saint Veronica wiped the face of Christ with her veil as he climbed Calvary carrying the cross and the veil retained an imprint of his likeness.
The subject was represented often during the Renaissance as a reminder of Christ's suffering. Burgkmair emphasises the immediacy of his suffering; tears roll down his cheeks from half-closed and swollen eyes.
The texture of the cloth is suggested and the illusionistic holes in the corners may have prompted the owner to pin it on to a wall. The extensive passages of white paper showing through the hair and crown probably allowed for the print to be coloured.
